One of the largest “tusker” elephants ever seen in Zimbabwe has been shot dead by a German hunter who paid $60,000 for a permit to shoot it. The killing comes just months after the killing death of Cecil the Lion, which
caused global outrage.
The elephant was killed on 8 October while being guided by an experienced, local hunter during his 21-day trip during which elephants, leopards, lions, buffalo and rhinoceros were considered targets. The organizers have refused to release the name of the hunter.
William Mabasa, a Zimbabwean said: “The most disappointing thing is that when a local Zimbabwean kills an animal for food for his family, he is sentenced to between 5 and 15 years in prison but when a wealthy foreign hunter does, he gets away with it. What message are we giving the people?”
