Netflix in Nigeria is currently one of the most talked about topics on Twitter. The popular American online streaming platform is now almost everywhere in the world, Nigeria inclusive. However, while half of my generation (which is definitely the target audience in Nigeria) is excited for the amazing opportunity to Netflix and chill, the question is, how long is Netflix going to be able to survive for?

I have already seen responses about how a lot of people are worried about the longevity of Netflix in Nigeria but are their fears valid?

Maybe!

The data situation in Nigeria is almost as serious as the light and water situation. In Naija, we do not have the luxury of data, forget all that broadband data whatever, have we even been able to deal with the 3G people? Do we even have enough data to double tap on Instagram?

Before you retweet on Twitter these days you have gotten a message from your service provider that your data has finished so are we going to really be doing Netflix or are we just going to stick with what we had before?

Then there is iROKO, those guys who have been successful but not too successful with online streaming in Nigeria.

They have been there; done it and even partnered with Spectranet 4G LTE services at a point but were they able to do what they should have been able to do normally in Nigeria? I doubt it. And reports claim that iROKO’s Njoku does not have any form of partnership or agreement with Netflix so basically the American brand is on its own here. And, in direct competition with Iroko.

Talking about competition with iROKO, would Netflix (a foreign brand) be able to compete successfully with iROKO (an indigenous brand), which most people are likely to prefer? Plus the audience in Nigeria interested in the Internet is the one with the really young people.

In America alone, Netflix has over 40 million subscribers, part of which surpasses the age of the target audience in Nigeria and which conveniently helps them hit their mark. Do they have plans for Netflix for adults and then hand out free computers with unlimited Internet access? Would they ever be able to mean something to the people in rural Nigeria? Would they have everyone in Urban Nigeria be interested? So many questions with answers we can only wait for in coming months. But again, Netflix is a multimillion-dollar brand, it must have done its homework and it certainly must have come prepared….

Mr. Collins needs to kill the Don Jazzy character. It has made him money and fame. But perhaps its time to quit the ‘mafia’ and live a normal life. Photo:Instagram

So to start with, I am not a hater. I do not wish any evil on Don Jazzy or Michael Collins. If anything, I can be categorized as an interested onlooker when I want to be passive or an invested businessman active in the Nigerian music industry for the past 18 years.

In addition, I am a writer. I have been told I am a very decent writer. Or maybe I’m living on past glory. Either way, I had another title I was working with. But I decided this one would attract the eyeballs I desperately need to get the attention I so desperately crave.

Finally, I understand the workings of PR. Hell, I handled the PR of Mo’ Hits in 2006 when the only talent wasD’banj. Back then, Wande was a dancer, Dr. Sid (I plead the Fifth) and D’Prince was a model. I do not wish death on Michael Collins. I however think the Don Jazzy brand is dead. Or should be rested. I’ll tell you why.

Do you remember Don Jazzy? Remember that Soundcity advert. I remember the first day I met D’banj and Don Jazzy. This must have been either late 2004 or sometime in 2005. I had been in the business as a journo for a few years by then so I knew them. We had done a story on Mr. Solek at Hip Hop World in 2003. Jazzy had worked as the keyboardist of the band but he had moved on to music production working under JJC. He was very quiet; never uttered a word. You could have been forgiven for thinking he was mute.

Back to the Soundcity advert. Don Jazzy didn’t say a word. Just whispered in D’banj’s ear while D’banj handled his business. It was brand new. It was refreshing. The ratings of the newly-established Soundcity music channel went through the roof. D’banj and Don Jazzy became the perfect example of a match made in heaven. Cobhams, if he could see them back then, would have known they were going places. So much so that Dr. Sid, a University of Ibadan-trained dentist and self-appointed administrator of eLDee’s Trybe Records, was happy to abandon that project and his album project to work under the tutelage of these relatively unknowns.

After that, the communication from the Mo’ Hits camp was that Don Jazzy was the boss. He was being driven around town by a university graduate who earns an enviable salary working in an oil company (Fifth). Jazzy didn’t speak in public. He never granted interviews. He asked simply that whatever you wanted to offer to him should be offered to his ‘children’. (Note that he had been calling his artistes his children since the Mo’ Hits days. Nobody questioned it then because this is the Don we’re talking about here.) In fact, once, I was at the crib of one of the Mo’ Hits people, and he told me I had to leave because Jazzy was coming. I was genuinely curious and somewhat impressed. Impressed because they kept the charade going even off-camera. Curious because, well, so could it be it wasn’t a charade after all?

Remember all those award ceremonies where someone from Mo’ Hits would win an award and spend half the speech time praise-and-worshipping Don Jazzy? Or when Don Jazzy himself would win an award for best production and his wards would mount the stage to receive on his behalf even while he was seated in the front row in the same building. Guys, let’s be honest, these are the images of Don Jazzy that made him the brand he is today. Those days when he only worked with his Mo’ Hits people and a literal handful of associates.

Don Jazzy at The Headies 2011.

In the real world, a don is a crime boss, crime lord, mob boss, kingpin, criminal mastermind; a person in charge of a criminal organization. He typically has absolute or nearly absolute control over his subordinates, is greatly feared by his subordinates for his ruthlessness and willingness to take lives in order to exert his influence, and profits from the criminal endeavours in which his organization engages. Replace the word ‘crime’ with music and you have Don Jazzy.

Mo’ Hits was an organized entity. At the head of it all was Don Jazzy; the Capo di tutt’i capi, the Godfather, the boss of all bosses. Complete with his staff. D’banj was his Underboss. Dr. Sid, being the most educated and exposed of the lot, was the Consigliere. The other artistes were the Caporegimes. The management and the other stragglers and hangers-on were the foot soldiers. In the golden words of Christopher Wallace, “things done changed!”

The first post-Mo’ Hits Don Jazzy media picture. Still in alignment with the Don Jazzy image.

Fast forward to January 1 2016. Now I am not interested in who was right or who was wrong. For me, the happenings of the early morning January 2 2016 made the Headies. They set the tone for the year. This is entertainment dammit. Are you not entertained?!!!

If you ask me, Don Jazzy had no business speaking toOlamide. I have seen enough Mafia movies to know that no Don that understands his worth would get so emotional as to entertain the thought of passing such a message on a public stage. That job is left to his Consigliere, in this case Dr. Sid, who is already disliked intensely for his supposed role in the Mo’ Hits breakup via the leaked tape. People would have talked. But Jazzy would have maintained his self-respect. He opened himself to ridicule the minute he opened his mouth on that stage.

Don Jazzy had no business speaking to Olamide. I have seen enough Mafia movies to know that no Don that understands his worth would get so emotional as to entertain the thought of passing such a message on a public stage.

I can trace this handfalling back to when Jazzy decided to start appearing in songs after the bitter divorce from D’banj. The Don Jazzy we knew and respected from a distance fell from heaven and became human. In fact, the Kokomaster showed his disgust over Jazzy’s features after their falling out. I very much doubt this would have happened if they were still together. Not that I think they knew any better then, but they had one script and they kept it simple by sticking to that story.

Of course, with the breakup and the subsequent interviews granted by D’banj, too much information was shared in the public space that caused irreparable damage to the carefully-crafted Don Jazzy image. I think Don Jazzy should have moved on to the next stage. Or developed a next stage to move to. He certainly should not have done Loya or Konga or Jantamanta (wtf?) as Don Jazzy. That’s not the Don Jazzy we were introduced to.

In truth, while we loved and respected Don Jazzy for his mystique, his music-making prowess and his relationship with D’banj, there was only so much he could achieve as a brand. However, this new guy is fun, is funny, seems to be humble, is extremely generous and, as such, is an endorsement magnet getting business from an endless list of companies. As it should be. As a businessman, it makes every sense for Michael Collins to be this new guy with access to millions of advertising dollars. But he cannot expect to eat his cake and have it. Something has to give!

Need I say more?

In conclusion, I think that as the head writer in this story, Mr. Collins needs to kill the Don Jazzy character. It has made him money and fame. But perhaps its time to quit the ‘mafia’ and live a normal life.

So, on a lighter note.

What name should Don Jazzy go with now?

My Guy Jazzy? That’s your round-the-way friendly neighborhood guy. Easygoing. No airs whatsoever.

Daddy Jazzy. Re his kids.

Judge Jazzy. Respected by all and lays down the law. Yet approachable in his manner. A friend to everybody and a friend to nobody.

Bro Jazzy. The senior brother who opens his door to any and every.

Arsene Wenger couldn’t conceal his frustration after Arsenal’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Liverpool saw the Gunners waste an opportunity to consolidate their position at the top of the Premier League.
But Wenger claimed Wednesday’s thrilling contest at Anfield underlined his team’s title credentials as he challenged his players to use their disappointment as a motivation for a first English crown in 12 years.
After chief rivals Manchester City were held at home to Everton, the Arsenal manager saw Joe Allen’s last-minute equaliser cost his team two points to leave them ahead of second placed Leicester only on goal difference.
“I am frustrated by the result and not disappointed by the performance, even if we started a bit apprehensively,” said Wenger.
“The frustration comes from the fact that at 3-2 we had three situations when we could have made it 4-2 and made a bad decision.
“That was a frustration for me but that can happen in England but overall a game between two teams who gave absolutely everything. Look at the results tonight it showed everywhere is even.
“I feel they need to transform that frustration into more motivation for the next game because there are more positives than negatives tonight.
“What happened tonight strengthened my belief we can have a big part to play in this league.”
Wenger hopes he can bolster his team before the weekend visit to Stoke, traditionally a tough fixture for his team, with the injured Alexis Sanchez and new signing Mohamed Elneny both potentially in contention.
“I am a bit cautious now,” said Wenger of Sanchez and his hamstring injury.
“There is an opportunity he will be involved in the squad on Sunday. Friday and Saturday will be two important days.
“Elneny has joined us and we will see if he can qualify for Sunday.”
Liverpool twice led with goals through Roberto Firmino only for Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud to cancel them out on each occasion.
– Verbal exchange –
The impressive Giroud gave Arsenal a second half lead but Allen netted in the 90th minute to earn Liverpool a point.
The game also featured a verbal exchange between Wenger and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on the touchline, although both made light of the incident after the game.
“I told him to just calm down or I will send you to stands,” joked Wenger.
“I don’t know really why. At Liverpool it is very tight, you are very close to each other.
“He had a little problem with the fourth official, he can explain better than I. It was all right. There was no bad feeling.”
Klopp has made a habit of asserting his larger than life personality on proceedings in the Premier League and was recently involved in a war of words with Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce.
“I told Arsene why I was a little bit emotional,” said Klopp. “Like we say in Germany, I was on the tree. It was a clear throw-in for us in a good moment, a good phase.
“The fourth official, I asked what he was doing. I said what I said, he said what he said. We had nothing, but I had nothing with Sam Allardyce. I had nothing with Arsene Wenger.
“I said what I said, obviously it was too much and he told the ref and after five minutes he came and spoke.”
The German was far happier and more forthcoming when discussing the form of Brazilian Firmino, however, after he scored his first home goals for the club.
“I could talk about this for half an hour,” he said. “He doesn’t know how good he is. If you are good, you have to show it.
“All of them were really good, perfect goals, the first goal was really good, the second spectacular, brilliant. He had a really good game, but he was not the only
The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has refused to grant an application of mareva injunction filed by the federal government seeking to stop MTN Nigeria Communications Limited from moving funds in its accounts in 21 commercial banks out of Nigeria.

Presiding Justice, Mohammed Idris, while ruling on the application filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), held that the Federal Government failed to place enough materials before the court to prove that MTN was about to empty its bank accounts and move its funds out of the country.

The government had filed the application to prevent MTN from boycotting the payment of the N1.04trn fine imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its failure to deactivate its unregistered subscribers.
The government had specifically urged the court to make an order directing all the 21 banks to open a special interest-yielding account in the name of the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court and move N1.04tn out of whatever funds that was standing to MTN’s credit in their possession.

The government in an affidavit attached to the application expressed the fear that MTN could move all its funds out of the country before the N1.04tn fine could be enforced.

Counsel to the Federal Government, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), in the 14-paragraph affidavit deposed to by one of his junior in chamber, Steve Nwabueze, alleged that MTN was in the habit of regularly repatriating its funds out of Nigeria.
Okpeseyi claimed that between October 2007 and May 2009, a period of 19 months, MTN moved over $7.7bn of the money made in Nigeria to a foreign account.

The lawyer also pointed out to the court an instance when in one day, specifically on February 8, 2008, MTN transferred over $936m out of Nigeria to accounts in Mauritius, Cayman Island and British Virgin Island.

He stated, “unless this honourable court urgently entertains this application, the plaintiff/respondent would move its funds out of Nigeria, being the jurisdiction of this honourable court, and thereby frustrate the enforcement of the fine in the likely event that this honourable court sanctions the imposition of the fine.”
Okpeseyi further insisted that MTN was under an obligation to pay the N1.04tn fine, because it was NCC’s administrative decision, which remained final unless it was reviewed by the commission or nullified by the court.

The senior lawyer also submitted that though NCC had earlier given MTN a concession on the fine and reduced it to N780bn, but since MTN had neglected or failed to pay on or before December 31, 2015, the fine remained N1.04tn.
Okpeseyi averred that instead of taking advantage of the concession, MTN resorted to filing a suit in order to buy time, with the hope that it could move all its funds out of Nigeria before the case would be decided.

He therefore urged the court to grant the application in the interest of justice to prevent the court’s decision from being rendered nugatory if it went in the favour of the Federal Government and NCC.
However, Justice Idris declined to grant the application holding that the case was a very sensitive one and of public interest, so he would rather urgently hear the case filed by MTN to challenge the fine and give a judgment within a short time.
But before he adjourned the case to January 22, 2016 for hearing, the Judge made an order for the parties to maintain status quo ante bellum pending the determination of the suit.
MTN had in December 2015 filed a suit through it lawyers, led by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), to challenge the sanction.
The telecommunication firm had argued that the NCC being a regulator, cannot assume all the functions of the state on its own, considering the fact that they made the regulation, prescribed the penalty and imposed the fine, payable to the commission and not the federal government.

MTN had also claimed that it was not afforded its constitutional right of fair hearing before a court of competent jurisdiction and more importantly, it had not been found guilty of any offence that will warrant it to pay such outrageous fine.
However, the Attorney General in his reply to the suit insisted that NCC is justified to impose the fine, and that it is his duty, as the chief law enforcement officer in the country, to ensure that all the laws made by the National Assembly are obeyed.
The NCC on its part has urged the court in a motion on notice filed through its lawyers, Ahmed Raji (SAN) and Mahmud Magaji (SAN), to dismiss or decline to hear the suit for want of jurisdiction or send it to Abuja.

The commission argued that the suit was wrongly filed in Lagos, noting that the subject of the dispute took place in Abuja, while the two respondents in the suit, NCC and the Attorney General of the Federation, are also based in Abuja.

Cristiano Ronaldo's statue on his home island of Madeira has been vandalised with Lionel Messi's name and shirt number painted on it.

The graffiti appeared on the statue in the island's capital Funchal on Tuesday night shortly after Barcelona's Messi claimed a fifth Ballon d'Or ahead of the Real Madrid star.

Messi's name and the number 10, both scrawled in red, had been removed on Wednesday after officials were alerted to the damage.

"It's a shameful act committed out of jealousy towards him," said Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro.
"The rage that some unloved and frustrated fatheads display in public in a disgraceful way which leaves me as a Portuguese person ashamed and sad."

Ronaldo unveiled the 11-foot bronze effigy of himself in December 2014 on the Funchal seafront, a few hundred metres from his own self-financed museum.

Kashmea Wahi, an 11-year-old student from the UK, just earned a place among the world’s intellectual 1 percent by getting a perfect score on her IQ test. The test’s maximum score is 161 for adults and 162 for test-takers below the age of 18. To make her achievement even more impressive, her score of 162 puts her two points higher than the likes of Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein.

After stumbling upon the Mensa test while surfing on her iPad, Wahi decided to test herself as a way of proving a point to her parents, both IT management consultants at the Deutsche Bank in London. She figured an impressive score might be an effective way to stop her parents from nagging her to study.

Wahi is currently a student at West London’s Notting Hill and Ealing Junior School, where she helped her team secure third place at last year’s Oxford Maths challenge. She plays chess amongst other hobbies and has competed on the national level. She is thought to be one of the youngest test takers ever to achieve a perfect score, partly because participants have to be at least 10 and a half to take it.

FIFA's emergency committee decided to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the organisation after some ethics charges were brought against him over world cup ticket sales. FIFA sent out a press release which stated:

The FIFA emergency committee decided to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect. Jerome Valcke is therefore no longer the secretary general of FIFA.

''The employment relationship between FIFA and Jerome Valcke has also been terminated.
The duties of the secretary general will continue to be assumed by the acting secretary general, Dr Markus Kattner."
Valcke is facing a nine-year ban from FIFA after an ethics investigation into several alleged offences including being connected to black market sales of World Cup tickets.
FIFA's investigatory chamber finished its probe last week and has recommended a nine-year ban and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (£69,000) on charges including conflicts of interest and offering and accepting gifts and other benefits.
Valcke was suspended after allegations were made claiming he planned to benefit from black market World Cup ticket sales.
He has denied any wrongdoing, saying his conduct had always been "exemplary.
It is the second time Valcke has been sacked by FIFA - he was dismissed in December 2006 as marketing director after an American judge said he had lied repeatedly during FIFA's botched sponsorship negotiations with rival card giants MasterCard and Visa. Less than eight months later, however, he was back in FIFA as second in command to president Sepp Blatter, who himself has been banned for eight years by the ethics committee"

5-year-old Elsie Frew has become a worldwide phenomenon after a photo her mum, Carolyn, took of her went viral. She posed for a photo while on holiday in Florida and at just the right moment, one cheeky horse called Sparky loomed into view to have his picture taken too.

The family had been enjoying a display by the Budweiser Brewery Horses at the Old Town amusement park in Kissimmee, Orlando when the pic was taken.

The pictured has garnered 10 million likes after media heavyweights like CNN and Fox News carried it.

Mother-of-five Carolyn, 42, from Mauchline, Ayrshire, who runs a vintage pram business, said: "Elise thinks it's great. She went back to school this week, and she thinks she's absolutely famous now."

Elise's dad Scott, also 42, who helps Carolyn with the pram business, said: "It's such a funny picture.
"People have been saying that it's so good it must have been photoshopped. But it's absolutely 100 per cent genuine. It's just one of those classic moments."

This story is getting more complicated. They released new cell phone video evidence claiming there was no rape. They also claimed that they walked in on the girl having sex with her own father in the park and joined in. This is their own version of the story. Not sure I believe it. Continue..

Here is what the NY Daily News is reporting:

A brother of one suspect came forward earlier in the day with an unverified 10-second video, shot with a cell phone, showing a smiling girl who’s naked from the waist down — supposedly the victim — sitting with a young man.
“You saying yeah?” says a voice off-camera. “It’s lit” — meaning the youths had the go-ahead for sexual relations with the 18-year-old woman, according to Billy Anderson, brother of suspect Ethan Phillip.
A cell phone was recovered, and the NYPD was seeking a search warrant to scour its contents, a police source said. One teen told cops he shot video of the victim and sent it to a relative, the source said.
Anderson said he was told the teens spied the victim and her father having sex on a tennis court when they arrived at the park, and they challenged the dad’s claim of getting chased away with a gun.
“No man in his right mind would leave their daughter like that,” Anderson told the Daily News. The police have since rubbished this claim, saying they found no evidence to support the father and daughter were engaged in sex.
