His first action was to have a counterfeiter make him official government documents with his name listed as the Deputy Director General of the Ministère de Postes et Télégraphes and Dapper Dan served as his secretary. He then wrote letters to the five most influential scrap iron dealers in Paris, inviting them to meet him in the suite of Hotel de Crillon to discuss an urgent matter.
During the meeting, after wining and dining with the men, he announced that the government had decided to rip down the Eiffel Tower and the resulting 7000 tons of metal would be for sale to the highest bidder among them. Due to the certain public outcry, he went on, the matter was to be kept secret until all the details were thought out.
Lustig rented limousines and gave tours of the tower to pick out the man most likely to fall for the scam; the one who seemed most anxious to get ahead. Andre Poisson was fairly new to the city, and Lustig quickly decided to focus on him. Poisson was new to the business community and was wanting to be noticed.
However, Poisson’s wife was skeptical, wondering who this official was, why everything was so secret, and why everything was being done so quickly. To deal with her suspicion, Lustig arranged another meeting, and then “confessed”. As a government minister, Lustig said, he did not make enough money to pursue the lifestyle he enjoyed, and needed to find ways to supplement his income. This meant that his dealings needed a certain discretion. Poisson understood immediately. He was dealing with another corrupt government official who wanted a bribe. That put Poisson’s mind at rest immediately, since he was familiar with the type and had no problems dealing with such people. Poisson would pay the phony deputy director $20,000 in cash, plus an additional $50,000 if Lustig could see to it that his was the winning bid. Lustig secured the $70,000 and in less than an hour, he was on his way back to Austria.
While on vacation in Vienna, he waited for the story to break, with, possibly, a description and sketch of himself, but it never did. Poisson, fearful of the embarrassment and prosecution for bribery such a disclosure would bring upon him, chose not to report Lustig’s scam.
Seeing that it worked the first time, Lustig decided to try it again. with the same techniques but with different scrap metal dealers. This time, a dealer was conned $100,000, but this dealer was unlike Poisson because he reported his loss to the police and the story exploded in the press. An American in Paris survived the recent attack on the Bataclan by playing dead. What’s even more extraordinary is that he also survived the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center back in 2001.The Telegraph reports that 36-year-old Matthew (whose last name has not been disclosed) was shot in the leg by one of the three attackers who opened fire and took hostages at the Paris venue. His wife had planned to accompany him to the sold-out Eagles of Death Metal concert that night, but stayed home with their two children after their attempts to find a babysitter failed.
Recognizing the sound of gunshots, “perhaps it’s my American culture,” he told the paper, Matthew bolted for the exit. He went down after a bullet hit his leg, and said he played dead in order to survive.
Each time the attackers paused to reload their guns, Matthew crawled forward “centimeter by centimeter.” Eventually, he saw the ledge of the exit, where he “was able to grip it with one finger, then the other.”
Finally reaching the exit, Matthew collapsed instantly onto the sidewalk, bleeding profusely and in shock. Daniel Psenny, a journalist for French paper Le Monde, saw Matthew emerge from the venue and, along with another man, dragged him away from the Bataclan theater.
"When I felt someone dragging me by the arms, I didn't even look up,” Matthew remembers. “I said, or at least in my head—'I love you, my angel.'"Psenny, who had been filming people fleeing the scene from his apartment and was shot while rescuing Matthew, said he relied on instinct. "I had the human reflex not to let someone die in front of me, but it was the circumstances that allowed it," he said.
The pair were holed up at Psenny’s apartment for three hours before police told residents it was safe to leave their apartments, and neighbors helped to stop excessive blood loss. Psenny and Matthew were then rushed to the George Pompidou European Hospital via ambulance for treatment. At the hospital, they made a pact to share a drink or two or “probably the entire bottle” after recovering from the traumatic experience.
Matthew, who moved with his family to Paris this past summer, used to live in New York. In 2001, he was at the foot of the World Trade Center towers on September 11th when the first plane struck the North Tower.
He broke into a run and didn’t look back. “I sprinted across half of Manhattan,” he recalls. “But what I went through in the Bataclan was 1,000 times worse.”
The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has disclosed that over 50million Nigerians do not have access to toilets hence resort to open defecation.

This was made known in a report issued yesterday by Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, UNICEF ‘A Field Office’ Communication Officer (Advocacy, Media and External Relations) on behalf of Sanjay Wijesekera, head of UNICEF’s global water, sanitation and hygiene programmes, to coincide with World Toilet Day.
The report titled, Improving Nutrition Outcomes with Better Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, pointed out the emerging evidence of links between inadequate sanitation and malnutrition among children.
Wijesekera was quoted as saying that “Nigeria loses over 150,000 children to diarrhea annually. After pneumonia, it is the biggest killer of Nigeria’s under-fives; 88 per cent of diarrhoea cases in Nigeria are attributed to unsafe water and sanitation. Where rates of toilet use are low, rates of diarrhoea tend to be high.
“Intestinal parasites such as roundworm, whipworm and hookworm are transmitted through contaminated soil in areas where open defecation is practiced. Hookworm is a major cause of anaemia in pregnant women, leading to malnourished, underweight babies.
“We need to bring concrete and innovative solutions to the problem of where people go to the toilet, otherwise we are failing millions of our poorest and most vulnerable children.”
